Tell us about your school and its team.
We started our team in April of 2022 with 7 students, but by 2023, we had grown to 24 students. We have competed and received medals in several tournaments, which has boosted our students’ confidence. Our program has instilled this confidence in students who were shy and who are not on other academic or athletic teams.

What is a goal for your team?
Speech and debate is one of the best teams at Joseph Martin Middle School. It helps students shine and feel great about themselves. We are also the only team in the South Shore, but we hope to open this wonderful experience to all middle school students across our city.

Which events do you participate in?
Dramatic Interpretation (DI), Duo Interpretation (DUO), Humorous Interpretation (HI), Poetry (POE), Prose (PRO), Storytelling (STO), Declamation (DEC), Impromptu (IMP), Original Oratory (OO), Big Questions (BQ)

How could additional funding help your school?
We would use the money for binders, materials, and transportations to events. One day, we may also be able to get school blazers. We are the only team in the South Shore, so we travel to other schools that are far away to compete.
