My love of debate began while in middle school with a five-day summer camp at the New York City Urban Debate League.
There, I discovered the excitement of researching issues, forming arguments, and engaging in spirited discussions with peers who were just as curious and determined as I was. I then joined weekly debate classes at the Bergen Debate Club and, throughout the pandemic, spent hours debating virtually from my bedroom. Those experiences set the trajectory for my next several years.
Debate has been an all-encompassing, transformative activity for me. It sparked a passion. I found a community. I found my voice. More importantly, I saw a need to make the activity more accessible. All students—regardless of socioeconomic background or geographic location—should have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
Over the past five years, leading this nonprofit has been the most rewarding of experiences. My responsibilities include writing grant applications, curating social media content, recruiting volunteers, organizing tournament logistics, and developing partnerships with schools and nonprofits. One of the most meaningful parts of my work is seeing debate flourish in unexpected places. Thanks to a creative approach to outreach, our programs have now extended across borders, hosting online workshops at the Kaabe Schools in Somaliland and the Jay Pritzker Academy in Cambodia. Previously, through our partnership with the Latino Education Advancement Fund, we launched a program teaching debate to elementary students who are native Spanish speakers.
Above all, I hope for Eloquence Academy to offer other students the same sense of confidence, drive, and belonging that debate has given me. Whether laughing with students on a late-night Zoom call or seeing their pride after a successful round, my everyday interactions are the constant and best reminder of why this work matters.
