Spencer sits on the Student Leadership Council of the National Speech & Debate Association, Student Advisory Council of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and is an independent consultant for 60+ young nonprofit leaders. Previously, Spencer worked at a number of nonprofit organizations and cultural institutions, including the New-York Historical Society, New York City Council, New York State Supreme Court, and Civics Unplugged.
Spencer’s work has been covered in the Virginia Tribune, News Channel 6, PIX11 News, and the National Speech & Debate Association’s Rostrum Magazine. As an expert on public speaking and evidence-based civil discourse, Spencer partnered with the Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College, New York City Urban Debate League, and Institute for Nonprofit Practice to author an online debate curriculum for 227,213 learners across 102 countries. His research articles have been published by the Alliance of Young Artists & Writers, the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, and other academic journals. Spencer has spoken about his journey, youth leadership, and social advocacy to 10,000 students, appearing on the National Youth Leadership Council’s Power of Young People Podcast and at various events across the nation.
Spencer has been personally recognized by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Points of Light, and Razom for Ukraine. He is a two-time Hershey Heartwarming Hero and an Everyday Young Hero. Recently, Spencer won the AmeriCorps We Serve to Remember Grant, Ashoka Changemakers Time for Change Youth Challenge, Bill of Rights Institute MyImpact Challenge, Cornell University National Contribution Project Award, Daily Points of Light Award, Karma for Cara Microgrant Award, President’s Volunteer Service Award, New Jersey Department of State Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission, New Jersey State Governor’s Volunteerism Award, and Youth Service America ServiceVote Challenge.
