Fundraising & Grants Coordinator Rudri Soni continued her series of in-person public speaking workshops at the California Association of Student Councils (CASC)! The workshops were an extension of our previous program at CASC’s Youth Action Summit of California.

Founded in 1947, CASC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization improving the world’s quality of life by developing skilled, ethical, and empathetic leaders from diverse cultures and backgrounds across California. They offer workshops, leadership conferences, and guided opportunities for youth to write policy proposals to the California State Board of Education. Because California encompasses over 6 million students, CASC is divided into smaller geographic regions, which better serve local interests and host in-person events on the weekend. In particular, Rudri led workshops at Region 10 (Anaheim, Irvine, and Orange County at large) and Region 11 (San Bernardino and Riverside counties).

Like at YASC, Rudri’s in-depth presentation focused on the mechanics of public speaking, covering Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle, the importance of rhetoric, and how to present with confidence and clarity. Following the lecture, students gathered in smaller groups where they ideated a novel product, designed a poster showcasing its everyday function, and pitched their innovation in a Shark Tank simulation. From makeup brushes to shoes for prom, it was a creative and lighthearted way to practice public speaking in real time.

Rudri placed special emphasis on strategies to mold a speech into advocacy for long-lasting social change, and we are excited to see students advocate for their peers’ interests at school.
