Eloquence Academy extends a formal welcome to George Washington Carver High School!

Located in Montgomery, Alabama, within the Montgomery Public School District, George Washington Carver High School is a public school serving 1,200 students in grades 9 through 12. Due to the school’s proximity to Maxwell Air Force Base, a significant portion of teachers and students have connections to current or retired military personnel. Many reside in the toughest zip codes within the Montgomery metropolitan area and identify as socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Historically, the George Washington Carver speech and debate club has been small. Last year, in an attempt to grow the club, Coach Cassie Rockette-Rogers invited membership from several rival schools on the west side of Montgomery, leading to a core group of 9 students competing in 6 events. However, due to the recency of the merge, Cassie explained: “We are just trying to compete, and funds are very limited. We must pay for dues, tournaments, assist with getting supplies for students, food, travel, and much more.”

Our Debate-Inspired Classrooms program supports the funding or logistical needs of K-12, public, independent, magnet, charter, boarding, and homeschools in developing their own debate programs. George Washington Carver will receive copies of our flagship curriculum to integrate into their afterschool club and Humanities classrooms. Later this year, we hope to issue a microgrant for George Washington Carver, to be spent on expanding access to tournaments and lessening each student’s out-of-pocket costs.
